A very attractive, well-loved imprint of John Wesley's edition of a'Kempis' spiritual classic, published late in his lifetime.
Interestingly, we should note that the first edition Wesley produced in 1735, during his rigorist era and prior to his professed evangelical conversion in 1738. And here we have him re-issueing it nearing the end of his life; indeed, he is personally listed as the publisher. As an historical and theological artifact, it demonstrates that Wesley never abandoned the mystical and ascetic tendencies of his pre-conversion days; they were instead amalgamated into his new larger and broader understanding of the Gospel.
Wesley, John. [Ed.] Thomas a'Kempis. An Extract from the Christian-Pattern: Or, a Treatise on the Imitation of Christ: Written in Latin by Thomas a'Kempis. Published by John Wesley. London. Printed in the Year 1788. 304pp.
A good - example in a partially deteriorated binding, though it still functions well and is held fairly securely. Part of the spine leather and the lower clasp lacking. Textually very good, crisp, and clean.
